The short version
We set no cookies. We use Google Analytics 4 for aggregate traffic measurement. We serve no advertising. We ask for your location only when you press the button, we never store it, and we never send it to anyone but the U.S. EPA's AirNow service to look up your air quality.
Your location
If you press Use my precise location, your browser asks your permission and then gives us your coordinates. We use them once, to fetch the air quality for that point, and we do not write them to any database or to any log we keep. Before a coordinate is used as a cache key it is rounded to roughly 11 km, so a cached result cannot be traced back to a household. You can refuse, and every city page works without it. Your browser controls this permission and you can revoke it at any time in your site settings.
Email alerts
If you sign up for smoke alerts we store your email address, the locations you chose and your AQI thresholds, so we can send you the alerts you asked for. We use double opt-in: you are not subscribed until you click the link in the confirmation email. Every alert carries a one-click unsubscribe. Unsubscribing deletes your address and your saved locations. If you never confirm, the pending record is discarded. Email is delivered by Resend, which processes your address on our behalf and does not use it for anything else.
Third parties that see your visit
Our typefaces are served from our own domain, so loading a page contacts no third party at all. Our pages are served by Cloudflare, which processes request metadata as our infrastructure provider.
Visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent before any advertising or measurement tag is allowed to run.
How long we keep things
Subscriber records last until you unsubscribe. Unconfirmed signups are discarded rather than kept. Cached air-quality data expires within an hour and contains no personal information. Server logs are retained by our infrastructure provider under their own retention schedule; we do not operate a separate log store.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can email [email protected] to see what we hold about you, correct it, or have it erased, and we will respond within 30 days. If you are in the EEA or the UK, our lawful basis is your consent for alerts (Article 6(1)(a)) and our legitimate interest in operating a working website; you may withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing, and you may complain to your national supervisory authority. If you are in California, we do not sell or share your personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA/CPRA, and we have not done so in the past twelve months.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us an email address, write to us and we will delete it.
Affiliate links
Some outbound product links are affiliate links — see our affiliate disclosure. Following one takes you to the retailer, who then applies their own privacy policy. We are not told who bought what.
Changes
If we change this policy we will change the review date below, and for anything that affects what we collect we will say so on the home page for at least 14 days.
